Joyce is a retired educator with 31 years’ experience as a counselor and teacher.  In 1994, she was named National Secondary Counselor of the Year by the American School Counselor Association and holds a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Georgia School Counselors Association.  She has also received an Outstanding National Student Assistance Professionals Award and a National Public Relations Award along with being recognized as Teacher of the Year.  After retiring from education, Joyce had a small business in which she worked with schools, school systems, and businesses nationally and internationally and presented workshops/ trainings in the areas of improving communication, understanding multiple intelligences, valuing all temperaments/personalities, enhancing team work, developing Student Assistance Programs, creating peer mediation programs/efforts, and enhancing counseling programs.  She also worked as the executive director of a state non-profit organization for 5 years, co-authored a Peer Mediation Manual, and had several articles published in professional journals.  Joyce has a doctor’s degree from the University of Georgia and also holds degrees from Georgia State University, Auburn University, and Samford University.

For 57 years, Joyce has been married to her husband, Martin, a retired Naval officer and C.P.A.  They have lived in the Grayson/Lawrenceville area for more than 18 years and are active in their community including being involved members of Anchor Church.

They have two daughters, Kelle Ray and Lesle Allen, and eight grandchildren.  One of their grandsons,  Avery Ray, is presently a senior at a Gwinnett County public school;  and two other grandsons attend the University of Georgia – Chandler Ray, a senior who will be attending law school next year,   and Davis Ray, a sophomore.  They also have a granddaughter, Jessica Allen, who is a senior at Baylor University and who will be attending graduate school at Baylor next school year and a grandson, Daniel Allen, who is a sophomore at the University of Arkansas.  Three other grandchildren,  Grace Allen,  who will be attending Samford University in the fall, and Anna Joy Allen and Mary Leigh Allen are home schooled.
